Tuesday Recap – Greek Mini-Unit Sanity Saver

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this review or post, but all opinions are our own.

Last year, I was slumping big time right about now!

This wintery slush time between Christmas and Spring break is a killer. We just barely limped through school and then we never really recovered after taking our Spring Break.

Maybe you can relate?

This year, I was determined to NOT go through that again. The full article detailing more of the ways we kept from getting burnt out this winter is on the Sonlight Blog.

What I want to share is what I am enjoying the most this winter.  Our sanity saver is this Mini-Unit on Greek History, we have been doing for the last few weeks.

I am a Greek Myth Nut

It all goes back to fourth grade. I had a class that was nothing but Greek mythology. Mrs. Scuttle would stand in the front of class and recite epic adventures. She would shut off all of the lights, so the room was dim with just the light that bled through the curtains. She would pass out amazingly detailed coloring pages, way before adult coloring pages were cool. She would spin her stories while we colored and drempt of heroes, swift sailing ships and far away lands.

Every week she chose two students to sit on Mt. Olympus. (Which was the top of the storage cabinets in the back of the class room.) If your were chosen, instead of coloring, you got to eat all of the ambrosia (candy) you wanted from her personal stash. It made her class spectacular for a dreamer like me and I have loved Greek Myths ever since.

Making Memories
I love these coloring pages from education.com. I forgot I still had a membership to the site. The kids loved their fun math booklets.

As homeschool moms, we forget, our job is to inspire.

I wanted a little bit of that warm, story-time feeling back in our homeschool. Our Sonlight Curriculum, this year, is covering Greek History. Over the winter holiday season, we were a little hit or miss with our reading, so instead of trying to get caught up or skip some books, I pulled out all of the books that covered all things Greek. I wanted to share the stories I love, the way I remember them.

We are having so much fun. Check out our Greek Journals. I bought this pack of blank books in the beloved Target Dollar section. Everyone is drawing the monsters and heroes we are reading about. The best part is that I get to show off my rad drawing skills.

Not Bound By My Schedule

Even though we use a curriculum that has an instructors guide, we have the freedom to made that guide work for us. I think people don’t realize the amount of flexibility that comes with our instructors guide. Knowing I have all of the material that I should cover for the school year gives me confidence to move things around as I see fit. If only for a season, like with our Greek Unit, or for the year, like several of my friends who use Sonlight their own way. Instead of feeling bound to my schedule I feel freed up from worrying about what to cover for the year.

By the way here is the more about the Memory Book from Sonlight. It was in my Instagram post. I promised to share the link in this post.

Homeschooling is hectic with seven kids.

Winter is getting to be down right unbearable. I boycotted Instagram (for like five minutes) because of all of the pics of kids playing outside. Outside!!! If only my kids could go outside for longer than twenty minutes. Still, I love homeschooling and all of the perks it offers. Thinking about schooling at home? Register over at Sonlight for their friends discount and see all the great books you could be reading with your kids.

What is your winter survival tip? Please share…
Have a great week my friends.
