Getting to the Root of Healthy Competition Among Siblings

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this review or post, but all opinions are our own.

As a freelance writer I strive to connect with publications that offer homeschooling families tips tools and resources they can use now. I loved getting to work with Homeschool Life Magazine to share about sibling competition. Check out the magazine for the full article but here is an excerpt…

“Competition is a part of everyday life around here; from who gets the front seat, to vying for mom’s attention at the dinner table. Our sweet babies haven’t even mastered crawling before they begin to compete for everything. It’s a problem as old as siblings. Cain and Abel competed for God’s favor. Jacob and Esau competed for their father’s blessing. It seems a part of human nature is to compete, so how do we as parents direct this energy to a positive end?”

In the full article in Homeschool Life Magazine, I share about the difference between healthy competition and unhealthy attitudes that can lead to sibling rivalry. Raising siblings together in a homeschool makes them peers as well as siblings. This can lead to sibling competition and comparison. Racing for the last snack in one thing, but as parents we need to be sure that there is always assurance of each child’s place in the family.

Different is Good!

We can help encourage our child’s individuality and give praise for their unique interests and abilities. This goes a long way in creating security for our kids. In the full article, I share how we have created a habit of affirmation and praise in our home to help counter the negative attitude that can creep in when jealoius thoughts are allowed to take root in a child’s heart.

Make Kid Competition Fun again

Family fun time is a great opportunity to have some healthy sibling competition. I share a few of the ways we use play to have a reason to work on character traits like joy, kindness, and to give praise.
