Hands-On Anatomy Study Aid with Dr. Livingston Puzzles

As a young artist, I spent hours pouring over head, hand and other anatomy studies in human drawing books and scientific textbooks. Dr. Livingston’s Anatomy Jigsaw Puzzles take anatomy studying to a whole new level.

I will be reviewing the entire seven puzzle set over the next few months. Our family does puzzles over the winter months, especially at Christmas and over the New Year. When I saw that this set was available for review I was thrilled to upgrade our puzzle game. So long unicorns, kittens and flowers! Say hello to vital organs, blood vessels, rib cages, spinal cords and more.

Dr. Livingston Human Anatomy puzzles are a deeply detailed depictions of different systems of the body

These detailed puzzles focus on a different anatomical structure. Volume 4 – The Human Right Arm: focuses on the musculature of the arms. While Volume 5 – The Human Left Arm: shows the skeletal structure of the arm, from the shoulder’s ball-and-socket joint down to the fingers’ many hinge joints.

By using these medically accurate human anatomy jigsaw puzzles, we can keep our winter tradition and get an in depth study of human organs, the human skeleton and the rest of the body. These anatomy puzzles give a cross section view of many parts of the whole body. From the concourse of blood vessels to a clear view of the entire rib cage. This way we can get school credit during our break with science puzzles. That is a deal that all moms can love.

From New School of Architect and Design:

The sound two materials make when they’re joined together, the scent of a certain solvent, the vivid color of a particular plant leaf – these all become easy-access sensory “bookmarks” for bringing the memory to the surface when it needs to be reviewed.

Learning Aids

Using Visual Aids in your homeschool Helps kids retain new information Faster and better

Research indicates a link between student engagement with a subject (typically defined as attention to the area of focus, active participation in learning, and time on task) and student achievement. These correlations remain strong for all levels of instruction, across all subject areas, and for varying instructional activities. Hand-on components multiply the learning experience.

Homeschool Play that Teaches too!

Our first puzzle is: The Human Head. It’s a whopping 441 piece puzzle that measures 23×18 inches long when completed.

The first thing I noticed was the sturdy, beautifully printed, box with a magnetic flap for sure closing. The detailed image on the inside reminds me of the old medical posters I’ve seen in vintage shops.

The medically accurate details, presented at 200% magnification caught the eye of my college student who is currently taking a level 200 biology course. She found many of the anatomy terms she was memorizing for her college tests.

These puzzles aren’t the type that you will want to toss on to the resale shop when you are done. If you have a big family who homeschool, plan to use these over and over again. Especially as your kids hit Anatomy and Physiology in middle school and again with biology in high school. The Human Head Anatomy Puzzle is a part of the complete 6th Grade Curriculum Kit from Timberdoodle Co. and The Complete Human Thorax puzzle is part of Timberdoodle’s 11th Grade Curriculum Kit.

A Whole Family Affair

Grab a couple of puzzles to tuck away this winter and imagine a few long chilly nights with an activity already planned fro you. Here in Iowa the winter days can be dark and cold. With windchills getting down to -30 below zero, there are always a few days when I am not pushing the kids to get outside to play. Quiet evenings are a nice turn, but too much free time with no set activity can create mayhem. I just saw the Junior Dr. Livingston Puzzles, so there is a puzzle that is just right for everyone in the family to get involved in.

You can order the individual puzzles, or if you are already sold on the idea of using these as a study aid, you can purchase The Set of 3 Original Anatomy Puzzles, featuring the human trunk: The Human Head, The Human Thorax with crosscuts of the sternum, and The Human Abdomen. Giving a in depth view of the brain, muscles of the neck, large intestines, pancreas and digestive track with medically accurate cross-sections of the human body. You can also take the Anatomy Challenge and get the whole set. When done you will have an impressive human body made of over ten feet of puzzle pieces.

Time Saver Tips: When working on a large puzzle, make sure to prep your work space. Wipe and dry the surface where you will be working to avoid sticky surprises. Don’t allow any drinks in the work area. (We may have lost a puzzle digit in a tragic water glass incident) Grab a puzzle sorter to help move loose pieces between participants. You can use two pieces of poster board and masking tape. Tape them together from the inside to create a large portfolio. Now you can slide the finished puzzles into this as you complete them.
